How to tell if your training is actually working, without a body scan

Body composition machines disagree with each other about the same body in the same week, so if your confidence rises and falls with a printout, you are measuring noise. The scoreboard that actually tells you whether training is working is a set of trends you can verify yourself: whether your lifts are going up, how you move, your energy, your sleep, how your clothes fit, your bloodwork, and how often something hurts. Machines can support that judgment. The mistake is letting them replace it. Here is what that mistake looks like, and how to build a scoreboard that can't lie to you.

Three machines, three stories

A client asked me a while back whether he should do another InBody scan. He'd already done one not long before. Then a DEXA. Then another scan somewhere else.

Same guy. Same body. Three different readings. Different body fat percentages, different lean mass numbers, a different story every time.

And I remember thinking: this is what a lot of people do now. They hand their body to a machine and let it tell them how to feel about themselves. Good scan, good mood. Bad scan, bad mood. Like the printout is the final word, with more authority than everything they can see and feel.

Why the numbers wobble, and why we chase them anyway

These machines estimate. They run your measurements through assumptions, and the assumptions differ by device, by model, and by what state your body is in that day. Hydration alone moves the needle. That is how one honest body generates three conflicting reports in a month. None of the machines are lying. They are all guessing differently.

I understand the pull. Numbers feel objective. Clean, safe, precise. Especially if you're the kind of person who likes certainty, and most people who take training seriously are. For a while I was the same. I wanted the clean answer, the proof, the clear scoreboard.

But here's the thing about a number that wobbles: it lets you obsess without thinking. It lets you feel in control while missing the obvious. You can have a better looking scan and feel worse. Worse energy, worse mood, worse relationship with food, more beat up. And somehow still call it progress because a printout said so.

It cuts the other way too, and this is the version I see more often. Somebody gets stronger, moves better, hurts less, looks better in the mirror, gets better labs, feels like themselves again. Then one machine hands them a number they don't like, and the whole month collapses. That's giving the wrong thing far too much power.

The scoreboard that works

What I care about now is simpler, and every line of it is something you can check without a machine:

Strength. Are your main lifts trending up over months?

Movement. Does anything that used to bother you bother you less?

Energy. How do you feel at 4pm on a normal day?

Sleep. Falling asleep, staying asleep.

Clothes. They don't recalibrate between wears.

Bloodwork. The health markers your doctor actually cares about, once or twice a year.

Pain frequency. How often something hurts enough to notice.

Data is not useless. Bloodwork matters, trends matter, measurements can help. But they should support your judgment, not replace it. The point of training was never to win a printout. It is to build a body that works, holds up, and feels better to live in. If the scoreboard doesn't measure that, it's the wrong scoreboard.

The test you can run this week

Take ten minutes and write your own six line scoreboard: current top set on your main lift, one movement that used to bug you, energy out of ten at 4pm, sleep quality out of ten, how one specific pair of pants fits, and how many days this month something hurt.

Date it. Review it monthly. And adopt one rule: no single machine, app, or scan gets to outvote the whole board.

A lot of adults I meet are not actually failing. They are using a terrible scoreboard, and a broken scoreboard can make good progress feel like failure. Fix the scoreboard first. Then find out how you're actually doing.
