Why most cardio advice is wrong for people who lift

Most cardio advice is written for people whose main goal is cardio. If your main goal is strength, following that advice costs you both: the conditioning interferes with lifting, the fatigue makes the conditioning miserable, and you eventually conclude you have to pick one. You don't. Lifters need conditioning dosed differently: mostly easy work that builds the engine at almost no recovery cost, a small amount of hard work used sparingly, and both placed so they never compete with the primary adaptation, which is strength. Get the dosing right and the two feed each other. Here is the argument, and why I'm currently betting a year of my own training on it.

My year of eating my own cooking

I'm living this article at the moment. Shoulder surgery took barbell pressing off my table for a year, and I made a decision in public when it did: this is the year my engine gets the attention my lifts always got. Conditioning to a level I've never touched. My resting heart rate lower and my aerobic capacity higher than they've ever been, while I keep every ounce of leg and back strength that training around the shoulder allows.

Which means every rule in this article is one I'm running on myself right now, after twenty five years of being the guy who treated cardio as either punishment or nothing. Most lifters live at one of those poles. Both are wrong, and both come from the same mistake: taking advice built for a different goal.

The mechanism: one budget, two customers

Strength and conditioning adaptations are both paid for out of the same recovery budget, the one covered in the subtraction article. The interference people fear is not some law that says cardio eats muscle. It is almost entirely a dosing and placement problem: hard conditioning is expensive, and if you buy a lot of it, there's less budget left to pay for strength.

The insight that fixes everything is that conditioning comes in two completely different price brackets.

Easy work is cheap. Long, genuinely easy effort, the kind where you can talk in full sentences, builds the aerobic base: the heart's capacity, the mitochondria, the recovery machinery you use between sets and between days. Its recovery cost is close to nothing, and its joint cost on a bike, a sled, or an incline walk is close to nothing. You can buy a lot of it without your squat noticing.

Hard work is expensive. Intervals and anything near maximal builds the top end fast, and bills you like a heavy leg day: nervous system, joints, sleep, appetite. It works. It's also the bracket where all the interference lives.

Most popular conditioning, the smashed together high intensity mixed stuff, manages to sit in the expensive bracket while building the base poorly: too hard to accumulate aerobic volume, too sloppy and repetitive under fatigue to be kind to joints, expensive everywhere at once. For someone whose main goal is strength, it is the worst purchase available. That's the version most lifters have tried, and it's why they think conditioning and lifting can't coexist.

Seasons

The last piece is that the dose moves through the year. When you're pushing strength hard, conditioning drops to its floor: easy work only, enough to hold the base. When strength is maintaining, conditioning gets to build: more easy volume, a weekly touch of hard work. One quality leads at a time, and the other holds. Trying to push both ceilings in the same month is how you hit neither, and it's the single most common conditioning mistake strong people make.

The test you can run this week

Add two sessions of thirty to forty minutes of genuinely easy work this week: bike, incline walk, or sled drags. The pace test is conversation. If you couldn't talk in full sentences, it wasn't easy, and easy is the assignment. Change nothing else about your training.

Run it for two weeks and watch two things: your resting heart rate in the morning, and how quickly you feel ready for the next set on your heaviest lifts. Those are the first two places an engine shows up. Your lifts should feel untouched or better.
